About us

  • The art society "Prickly Pear" is a non-political organization involving individuals who aim to promote handpapermaking artistically, educationally and practically.
  • The interest in handmade paper as a medium will be implemented through various artistic and educational means (e.g. exhibitions and workshops) as well as by organizing charity events (e.g. workshops at orphanages; one such project is already underway).
  • The society has just just received socially beneficial organization status from the Latvian Internal Revenue Service that allows us to accept donations by offering tax exemption.

Please watch the following video illustrating the process of hand papermaking:

Prickly Pear is a cactus that grows in Texas where Ilze learned the technique of hand papermaking and pulp painting at the SSA. After returning from Texas, Ilze has organized exhibitions and handpapermaking workshops throughout Latvia. The professioanl publication The Hand Papermaking Newsletter recently printed Ilze's article on the activities. You can read it here.
